Assignment 5 - National Photographic Prize

The first prize, in my opinion, goes to Mark Rogers!

Rowan McNamara by Mark Rogers 2009
Rowan McNamara at an abandoned community, Jay Creek, outside Alice Springs. Photographed between takes on Warwick Thornton's film 'Samson & Delilah'.

Fantastic! It draws you to create meaning from the photograph. My eyes are drawn to the young boy in the wheelchair at the lower half of the very large, unframed photograph (approx. H3xW2 m). This boy has a sad and lost stare on his face. The photograph gives the impression that he is staring off into the darkness, which could be an exaggeration of his loneliness in the abandoned community.

This photograph, in my opinion, would not be in the final set.
Julian by Jorica Purlija 2008
This is the brother of my daughter's friend at their farewell party for their house which was being demolished. The kids were allowed to completely cover the interior with paint. I recorded the event. I like this photo for the intensity in Julian's eyes, ablaze with new hopes and a new chapter.
This photo, to me, lacks emotion. I am not convinced there is any feeling in the subjects eyes, but definitely not "ablaze with new hopes".
